Helenka Koltonowska

Helenka received her Bachelors Degree in History, with distinction from the University of Washington in 1989.  While attending the University of Washington, Helenka worked as a domestic violence advocate at New Beginnings Shelter for survivors of domestic violence and interned at the Family Violence Project in Seattle.

Helenka went on to law school and graduated from the University of Washington School of Law with a Juris Doctor Degree in 1993.  During Law school Helenka volunteered for the Seattle King County Bar Association for the Self Help Legal Program, helping low income clients file divorces and for the King County Prosecutor’s Office.

After working for a year as a contract prosecutor with King County, Helenka went on to be a Deputy Prosecutor for Snohomish County.  Helenka has tried over 100 jury trials with a focus on domestic violence cases.  In 1994, Helenka started the felony domestic violence unit in Snohomish County which was funded through the STOP grant program. During her time as a prosecutor, Helenka taught classes on domestic violence and how to prosecute cases without the victims presence to law enforcement and fellow prosecutors.  Helenka used this knowledge to establish excited utterance in three district courts.  When Helenka left Snohomish County Prosecutor’s Office in 2000, the Washington Women’s Lawyers Association Snohomish County Chapter later gave Helenka an award for her public service and dedication to domestic violence victims.

Since 2006, Helenka has returned twice to Snohomish County as a contract prosecutor working in the misdemeanor domestic violence unit and in the felony property crimes unit.

Helenka opines, “Family Law and criminal law go hand in hand.  My familiarity and experience with domestic violence and the laws available to keep victims safe, helps me be a better advocate for my clients.  I welcome this opportunity working at the Tsai Law Company, PLLC to provide well rounded service of family law and criminal defense as needed.”

Helenka served on the following committees: Stop Grant Steering committee (1995-1998); Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence Committee (1998) a committee which drafted statewide domestic violence policy for the treatment of batterers; attended the Subcommittee of the Snohomish county law and justice committee (1998).

Helenka is a member of the Washington State Bar Association, the Snohomish County Bar Association and the King County Bar Association.
